The History Behind Black Friday

Black Friday is without a doubt one of the biggest shopping holidays of the year. It is the biggest sale event of the year when many products are available at heavy discounts. But surprisingly, a lot of people don’t know anything about the history of Black Friday.

There are different stories and theories about the origin of the name ‘Black Friday.’ But most seem quite strange. The most popular story claims that the name was coined back in the late 1860s when a major stock market crashed.

But how true is that? Let’s find that out today!

Why ‘Black Friday?’

Black Friday is the one day shoppers can find the best deals on just about any product both online and in stores. Products like mattresses, laptops, stand mixers, accessories, and whatnot drops to all-time low prices, often with very limited stock.

This is why many people believe that the day after Thanksgiving is called Black Friday because stores go from operating at a loss or being ‘in the red’ to earning a profit or being ‘in the black.’ While there is a bit of truth to this, the story is actually a bit darker.

According to sources like Business Insider, the term ‘Black Friday’ was first coined in 1868 when two investors, Jay Gould and Jim Fisk, caused a market crash by driving up the price of gold. As a result, the stock market dropped 20%, foreign trade was stopped, and farmers experienced a huge drop in the values of corn and wheat.

Later in Philadelphia during the late 1950s and early 1960s, the term was resurrected and used to refer to the day falling between Thanksgiving and the Army-Navy game. The event summoned large crowds of shoppers and tourists. This required extra hours put in by law enforcement to moderate and control the traffic.

Much later, in Philadelphia during the late 1950s and early 1960s, the term was resurrected and used to refer to the day between Thanksgiving and the Army-Navy game. The event would summon large crowds of tourists and shoppers, requiring extra hours put in by law enforcement to moderate the traffic.

It wasn’t until the late 1980s that the term was associated with shopping. Retailers reinvented the ‘Black Friday’ name to reflect the backstory of how accountants used different colour inks, including red for negative earnings and back for positive earnings, to denote a company’s profitability.

This is how Black Friday became the day when stores finally turned a profit. The name stuck and since then, Black Friday has evolved into a season-long event that’s spawned more shopping days like Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday.

When Is Black Friday 2022?

This year, Black Friday lands on 25 November 2022. Cyber Monday, which is the online-only sales event that follows Black Friday, lands on 28 November 2022. In the last few years, these two shopping events have become almost synonymous because of their calendar proximity.
